What Do They Do?
Pharmacy techs are essentially office managers in their pharmacies. Their responsibilities can vary based on the type of pharmacy that employs them and their qualifications. However, most pharmacy techs take on some combination of duties, from dealing with customers to answering the phone, calling in refill requests to doctor offices, helping the pharmacist pull drugs, maintaining stock and inventory and handling the paperwork for the pharmacy.
How Much Do They Make?
The answer really depends on experience and training. Pharmacy techs who are hired without any experience or qualification may barely make minimum wage as they learn the ropes. Those with a certification from a pharmacy tech training program can increase their earning potential significantly. Most techs with certification start around $11 per hour, and as they gain work experience, that wage increases.
Note that there is much disparity between such wages in different areas. Large city wages tend to be higher than small towns. Likewise, where a tech works makes a difference hospitals pay the most, while chain pharmacy counters pay the least.
